Mind Body Syndromes and Hypnosis: Why Your Body Might Be Trying to Tell You Something
With Leonie O’Connell
If you've ever wondered whether stress, emotions, or unresolved experiences could be contributing to physical symptoms, you're not alone.
During my interview with clinical hypnotherapist and educator Leonie O'Connell, we explored one of the most fascinating topics in modern hypnotherapy, Mind Body Syndromes, where psychology, physiology, and healing all come together.
Leonie will be presenting this powerful topic at the Australian Hypnosis Conference 2026, and after our conversation, I have no doubt it's going to be one of those sessions that has people thinking long after they leave the room.
What Are Mind Body Syndromes?
According to Leonie, our mind and body aren't separate systems working independently.
"They're one whole system."
While modern medicine is exceptional at diagnosing physical conditions, hypnotherapy gives us another way of understanding why those conditions may develop, persist, or become more difficult to manage.
Rather than asking only "What's happening in the body?", Leonie encourages therapists to also ask:
What's happening emotionally?
What stress has been building over time?
What messages might the body be trying to communicate?
It's an approach that doesn't replace medical treatment, it complements it.

Can Hypnosis Help Physical Conditions?
One of the biggest myths Leonie hopes to challenge is that hypnosis is only useful for anxiety or habits. Throughout her years in practice, she's worked alongside clients experiencing:
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Chronic pain
Tinnitus
Psoriasis
Persistent back pain
Cancer support (working alongside medical treatment)
Stress-related physical symptoms
Many people have already tried medications, specialists, diets, and countless appointments before discovering hypnotherapy. Sometimes, Leonie says, nobody has ever explained the powerful connection between the nervous system, emotions, and physical health.
It's Not "All In Your Head"
One thing Leonie is very clear about is that mind body syndromes don't mean symptoms are imaginary. Pain is real. Tinnitus is real. Digestive issues are real. Skin conditions are real. The question isn't whether they're real. The question is whether unresolved stress, nervous system overload, or emotional patterns may also be influencing the way those symptoms are experienced. That distinction changes everything.
Why the Nervous System Matters
Many hypnotherapists are comfortable helping clients relax. Settling the nervous system is often the first step. But Leonie believes that's only the beginning. Her presentation explores what comes next. How do we actually work with the emotional patterns beneath chronic symptoms? How do we help clients uncover the processes driving their physical experiences? More importantly, what practical hypnosis approaches can therapists use in the consulting room? These are exactly the questions she'll be answering during her presentation.
Real Stories That Inspire Hope
One story that really stayed with me involved a client suffering from severe tinnitus. After an extremely stressful period, the ringing in his ears became overwhelming. He described it as sounding like a ride-on lawn mower inside his head. It affected his work, his concentration, and his quality of life so dramatically that he had begun contemplating suicide. Following hypnotherapy, the intensity reduced significantly during the very first session. While every client is different and results naturally vary from person to person, stories like these remind us why understanding the mind body connection can be so valuable.
Looking Beyond the Symptom
One of the ideas I loved most from our conversation was learning to become curious about symptoms rather than simply fighting them.
Instead of asking: "How do I get rid of this?" Perhaps we can also ask: "What is my body trying to tell me?"
Leonie explains that symptoms can become valuable information. Once people understand the patterns behind them, they're often able to recognise early warning signs before stress builds into something much bigger. That shift in perspective alone can be incredibly empowering.
Why Every Hypnotherapist Should Understand Mind Body Syndromes
Whether you're newly qualified or have been working with clients for decades, this presentation offers practical tools you can immediately apply.
You'll gain:
A deeper understanding of the mind body connection.
Greater confidence working with physical presentations.
Practical hypnosis processes, not just theory.
New ways of thinking about chronic conditions.
Greater confidence supporting clients alongside conventional healthcare.
As Leonie says, "Knowing something is one thing. Knowing what to do with it is another."
That's exactly what this presentation delivers.
